Virgin Media acquires Waterford cable television company

Virgin Media Ireland has acquired Waterford based Casey Cablevision for an undisclosed price.

Established in 1979, the family-owned Casey Cablevision provides pay-TV, high speed broadband and phone services to over 2,000 customers in Dungarvan and the surrounding areas.

“The Casey family were true pioneers of the cable industry in Ireland, they were the first to invest in fibre optic cabling which allowed them to offer high speed broadband to customers in the South East when the provision of such services was a distant dream for Irish consumers and businesses,” Paul Farrell, vice president of commercial at Virgin Media Ireland, said.

“We look forward to working with our new colleagues in Casey Cablevision and delivering new opportunities for growth and expansion in the region.”

Virgin Media is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Liberty Global. The acquisition will be subject to competition and regulatory approval.

In 2016 Virgin Media posted pre-tax losses of almost €11.28m on the back of falling customers. The company said that results were in line with management expectations.
